Following the success of their 2009 LP 'I And Love And You', The Avett Brothers’ seventh album 'The Carpenter' is set to release on September 11th of this year. Today, we get our first listen to the lead single from the record, 'Live and Die':

During a recent Q&A with Rolling Stone, Scott Avett discussed the new LP, and how the band coped with the tragedy of bassist Bob Crawford's daughter, Hallie, who was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Many of the songs on the album, Avett said, are very private and address some personal issues, such as their perspective on life and death. He said the hardship that Crawford’s daughter is facing has changed the lives of the band members, which comes through in the music:

As we get older, a lot of the things we said in the past that we thought we believed about understanding life or death, I don't know that we understood them as well as we do now and I don’t know that we understand them now, but we're closer to understanding. The hard times with Bob and his daughter's illness was something that we woke up to and changed our lives entirely.

Avett said Crawford's daughter is receiving treatment at home after being in St. Jude's hospital for nine months, where he said Crawford lived when he wasn't playing shows.

'The Carpenter' is slated for release on September 11th but you many not have to wait quite that long to hear some of the new material from the record; The Avett Brothers will headline Night 2 of the 2012 Cities 97 Basilica Block Party on July 7th and we're guessing/wishing/hoping that they'll road test a few of the new tracks during their set...
