LIVE SHOWS

 --Thursday, June 21, 2012—

Oake on the Water w/ Lucy Michelle & the Velvet Lapelles

Lola’s Lakehouse, Waconia/ 3:00-7:00/ FREE/ All Ages

--One of the best ways to spend a Thursday afternoon in the summer and this week these excellent local folk-rockers will be there live.

Booker T. Jones  [Highly Recommended]

Dakota/ 7:00-$45  9:00-$30/ All Ages

--A three-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Jones played on hundreds of songs, many of them hits as part of the house band, Booker T and the MG’s at Stax Studios. Some the biggest hits on Stax Records, though,  were their own including “Green Onions” and “Time Is Tight”. He is still at the top of his game playing that soulful, groovin Hammond B3 organ and sought out by many young artists.

Steve Poltz

Fine Line/ 8:00/ $21/ 18+

--This Canadian-born artist has long lived in Southern California and is considered one finest in the long tradition of acoustic coffeehouse-type performers. He is known for co-founding, The Rugburns, in the early 90’s and more importantly for co-writing Jewel’s biggest hit, “You Were Meant For Me”.

Kim Lenz & The Jaguars

Lee’s/ 9:00/ $10/ 21+

--From Dallas, TX, this one of the better rockabilly bands out there today and the fact that they are fronted by a talented, sassy redheaded gal makes them very rare and just a whole lot of fun!

Chris Duarte

Famous Dave’s/ 8:00/ $5/ All Ages

--Fiery Texas blues guitarist and singer.

Blue Man Group  [thru Sunday, June 24]

Orpheum/ various times/ $35-80/ All Ages

--Although BMG has toured previously with its’ big arena rock show, this will be their first theatrical production to tour North America. This much more intimate show will feature classic Blue Man moments as well as brand new content.

Nikki & the RueMates  [Every Thursday in the summer]

The Sea Salt, Minnehaha Falls/ 5:30-7:30/ FREE/ All Ages

--Wonderful acoustic roots rock on the patio outside of one of best little seafood shacks in the country. Food, beer, and wine available.

The Butanes  [Every Thursday]

Shaw’s, NE Mpls/ 8:30/ FREE/ 21+

--Friday, June 22, 2012—

Collective Soul

Brick/ 8:00/ $25-27/ 18+

--Since breaking out in 1993 with their hit “Shine”, these alt-rock heroes have gone to have six more Billboard Mainstream Rock #1 Songs and four platinum albums. They were recently inducted in to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and are still playing well and have most of their original members.

Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers

Cabooze/ 9:00/ $16-18/ 21+

--RCPM have always been a great live act but they also really put it together on their most recent album, “Unida Cantina”  and a lot of other Americana and alt-country fans must agree because it hit #4 on Billboard’s Rock Albums chart last spring.

Pieta Brown and Bo Ramsey w/ Ray Barnard

James J. Hill Reference Library, St Paul/ 9:00/ $22/ All Ages

--I love this young lady’s folk-rock singing and songwriting and I’m not alone. Her second and third albums in 2005 and 2007 made it on to a lot of Top 10 lists and after her 2010 release, “One and All”, none other than Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits fame asked her to open for him on his North American tour. Her guitarist, Bo Ramsey, was Lucinda Williams’ longtime lead guitarist.

Old Californio w/ Steve Kaul & the Brass Kings

Lee’s/ 9:00/ $6/ 21+

--OC is from Pasadena, CA and move effortlessly between roots-rock and country-folk and are a real treat live. Locals, the Brass Kings, are old-school bluegrass players on traditional instruments who carry on the long revered jug-band tradition of the Twin Cities.

Hookers and Blow

Crooked Pint Ale House/ 9:00/ $10/ 21+

--If you like well-played covers of Top Forty hits from the 60’s thru the 80’s, these are your guys.

Live Racing and Music at Canterbury Park

Canterbury Park, Shakopee/ 7:00/ All Ages

--Live horse racing, great drink specials and live music from Coyote Wild outside along the rail in between races will make for a fun night.

--Saturday, June 23, 2012—

The Pines w/ Lucy Michelle & the Velvet Lapelles  [Highly Recommended]

Minnesota Zoo/ 7:30/ $24/ All Ages

--The Pines can no longer be considered a “local” band as they have fans all around the country and the rest of the world and are playing some of the large festivals this summer. I loved their beautiful roots and folk-rock songs and harmonies as a two-man band but now fleshed out to a six piece, they are even better on record and more able to put on a stronger live show and the Zoo is the perfect place to hear these guyss!

River’s Edge Music Festival w/ Tool  [Sunday also]

Harriet Island/ Noon-10:00/ One Day $65  Two Day $110/ All Ages

--SATURDAY; Tool, Sublime, Motion City Soundtrack, Scissor Sisters, Quietdrive etc.

“Whole Lotta Zep”; Full Performances of Led Zeppelin I & II

Cabooze/ 9:30/ $10-12/ 18+

--Some of the best local rock and jam-band musicians are getting together to roll through a couple of Zeppelin’s best albums.

Husker Dudes [Chicago] w/ Kruddler

Turf Club/ 10:00/ $7/ 21+

--Just like David Gilmour is a fan of Australian Pink Floyd, you can count Greg Norton, bassist, and Grant Hart, drummer, of the truly legendary 80’s Twin Cities punk and hard rock band, Husker Du, as fans of this fun cover band from Chicago as evidenced by the fact that each has joined the group on stage. This show should be quite the trip down memory lane for the older crowd and a good chance to catch just a bit of the lightening that was Husker Du live for the younger set.

The New Primitives  [Free outside]

Lake Harriet Bandshell/ 7:30/ FREE/ All Ages

--Funky, soulful world music

The Daredevil Christopher Wright CD Release

The Cedar/ 8:00/ $10-12/ All Ages

--Before Bon Iver ever recorded a song, the best rockin’ indie folk-rock band with great harmonies out of Eau Claire was this trio and the “hear a pin drop” atmosphere of The Cedar is the right place to hear these talented multi-instrumentalists and singers do their thing.

--Sunday, June 24, 2012—

Tedeschi Trucks Band  [Monday also, may sell out]

Minnesota Zoo/ 7:30/ $58-66/ All Ages

--Great 11-piece southern rock band with plenty of blues, soul, and funk touches to keep any fan of those genres happy! Think Allman Brothers with a killer horn section and a Boston gal out front on vocals and guitar.

Ticket to Brasil  [Free outside]

Lake Harriet Bandshell/ 5:30/ Free/ All Ages

--Good local world music group with fine guitarist Pavel Jany.

Li’l Brian & the Zydeco Travelers

Half Time Rec, St Paul/ 8:00/ 18+

--Excellent zydeco dance and boogie band out of Houston, TX.

The Smithereens w/ The Flamin’ Oh’s

Famous Dave’s, Uptown/ Doors 6:00  Music 7:00/ $25-30/ 18+

-Theses NJ guys were recently inducted into the New Jersey Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame along with Bruce Springsteen, and Bon Jovi! Why you ask? “Blood & Roses” #14, “Only A Memory” #1, “Behind The Wall of Sleep” #23, and “A Girl Like You” #2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts to name just a few of their best songs! These guys were a staple on Cities 97 in the 80’s and early 90’s with their power pop/college rock and they are still playing well. Please come on out and join BT and I for a fun walk down memory lane. Local rock legends The Flamin’ Oh’s open.

Henry’s Funeral Shoe

Bayport BBQ/ 8:00/ $10/ 18+

--Raw, revved-up contemporary blues from Britain with a great lead guitarist.

--Monday, June 25, 2012—

Destroyer

The Cedar/ 8:00/ $15-18/ All Ages

--This Canadian indie rock band with pop leanings has long been the vehicle for Vancouver singer-songwriter Dan Bejar who also has provided some of the better songs for another Vancouver band, The New Pornographers. This is your “take a chance” show of the week as Bejar can really mix it up album to album and tour to tour but it’s always a quality listening experience.

The Cactus Blossoms  [every Monday]

Turf Club / 9:00/ $5/ 21+

--Wonderful old-school country originals with excellent harmonies.

--Tuesday, June 26, 2012—

JD McPherson  [Highly Recommended!!!]

Fine Line/ 8:00/ $15/ 18+

--Think a bit of early Elvis Presley and I don’t write that casually! On his debut the album, “Signs and Signifiers” and more so live, this is one of the best young roots and rockabilly artists out there. While he’s not reinventing the genre, he and the band are so good and energetic that it seems fresh. Check out his performance on Conan a couple of weeks ago to see what you think.

The Drowning Men w/ River City Extension

7th St Entry/ 8:00/ $10-13/ 18+

--One band is from CA, the other is from NJ but both are raucous and talented indie folk-rock bands on their way up! Each has played some of the big national music fests and TDM has toured with Flogging Molly and RCE has spent time opening for The Avett Brothers.

Howard Jones w/ DJ Jake Rudh

Varsity/ 8:00/ $30-35/ 18+

--Yes, that Howard Jones, the king of British synthpop in the 80’s who was all over U.S. radio with his Top 5 hits, “No One Is To Blame” and “Things Can Only Get Better”. He’ll be playing his first two albums in their entirety and hits from a few others.

Retribution Gospel Choir

Turf Club/ 9:00/ $10/ 21+

--RGC is a raw bluesy rock band led by Alan Sparhawk of the world famous Duluth band, Low. Think early Rolling Stones. I know it’s a Tuesday night but this is a combination that you should see at least once this month with no holding back! In other words, take the day off on Wednesday!

International Reggae All-Stars  [every Tuesday]

Bunkers / 9:00/ $6/ 21+

--Good roots-reggae originals and plenty of covers.

--Wednesday, June 27, 2012—

Gavin DeGraw and Colbie Caillat  [Sold out!]

Minnesota Zoo/ 7:00/ $56/ All Ages

Dream Theater

State/ 7:30/ $54-69/ All Ages

--Their progressive metal and rock is not my cup of tea but these are highly accomplished musicians who have had several Top 10 albums and been nominated for a Grammy.

The Promise Ring

Varsity/ 8:00/ $25-GA  ($40 Mezzanine seating)/ 18+

--This is a reunion tour for these former indie pop/emo bigwigs from the late 90’s and reviews from the road have been good.

Nick and The Feelin at The Happy Gnome [every Wednesday]

The Happy Gnome upstairs, St Paul/ 8:00/ Free/ 21+

--Good piano-led music for free and just $4 for all MN craft beer pours.

Molly Maher & Eric Koskinen  [every Wednesday]

Aster Café at Riverplace/ 9:00/ $4/ 21+

--The best night of local roots and Americana music in the Twin Cities each week moved to a new location. Superb musicianship.

Oake on the Water w/ Civil Twilight

Admiral D’s, White Bear Lake/ 3:00-7:00/ FREE/ All Ages

--One of the best ways to spend a Thursday afternoon in the summer.

Emmylou Harris

Minnesota Zoo/ 7:30/ $58/ All Ages

--Twelve Grammy Awards! Three CMA Awards! And one of the most sought-after artists to work with by others be they Bob Dylan and Neil Young way back when right up to Ryan Adams and Bright Eyes. She always puts on a great show and it is for fans of country, folk, bluegrass, pop, and/or alt-whatever.

Greg Proops  [Comedian]

Varsity/ 8:00/ $17-20/ 18+

--Very funny stand-up performer who is equally adept at improv as demonstrated by his several-year runs on both the US and UK versions of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”.

The Butanes  [Every Thursday]

Shaw’s, NE Mpls/ 8:30/ FREE/ 21+

--Great 60’s and 70’s soul music with some classy blues and rock mixed in. Highly danceable!
