LIVE SHOWS
--Thursday, Oct 25, 2012
Joshua Radin & A Fine Frenzy [Two Cities 97 Favorites]
Mill City Nights/ 8:00/ $26-30/ 18+
--Radin is a true craftsman when it comes to singing and songwriting! His songs have been used in over 75 TV shows and films and his last three albums have gone Top 10 on three different Billboard Charts; Rock, Indie AND Folk! Alt-pop free spirit Alison Sudol, aka A Fine Frenzy, did one of the finest “Oake On The Water” live performances two summers ago and her brand new CD, Pines, released October 9 is wonderful with her shining on both upbeat piano rockers and quieter acoustic guitar tunes!
Glen Phillips (Toad The Wet Sprocket) and Grant Lee Phillips [Top Singer/Songwriters Playing Together and Storytelling]
The Cedar/ 7:30/ $20/ AA
--Both artists are fine singer/songwriters but Grant especially is a great guitarist and also highly proficient on harmonica, mandolin and piano. Glen is working on a new Toad album so we may get to hear some of those songs. They will be playing solo, together and swapping stories!
Uncle Kracker [Rock, Country and a bit of Hip Hop]
Cabooze/ 9:00/ $12-15/ 18+
--I like an artist who evolves throughout his career. Matt Shafer’s, aka Uncle Kracker’s, Kid Rock-produced debut album Double Wide was a huge hit with its’ big single “Follow Me”. He did not stick with the rap-rock formula though. His second CD, No Stranger To Shame, also had a Top 10 hit but it was a cover of the old soul hit “Drift Away” and it set a record for most weeks, 28, at #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart! Flash forward a few more years and he has successfully added country in to his repertoire. Should be a fun show!
Donovan Frankenreiter [Fun Upbeat folk-Rock]
Varsity/ 7:00/ $21-23/ AA
--Jack Johnson and G Love pal Frankenreiter has just released the cleanest, least busy but most upbeat album of his recording career with the apt title, Start Livin’. On several tunes he eschews drums for simple handclaps and his guitar playing really shines along with the vocal harmonies.
Alison Scott w/ Kevin Bowe; Minnesota Zoo’s New “Live On Stage” Acoustic Series

Morrissey- POSTPONED Due to Mother’s Illness. NEW DATE TBD
Orpheum/ 7:30/ $39.50-75/ AA
--Whether with The Smiths or on his solo material, Morrissey’s music has been described as moody, mopey,and/or melancholy and those weren’t criticisms! Throughout it all though, one of the most memorable and interesting singing voices of the last thirty years cuts through and if you’ve never seen him, I highly recommend you check him out!

Cat Power [Highly Recommended Lo-Fi, Indie, Folk and Blues-Rock!]]
Mill City Nights/ 9:00/ $34.50-40/ 18+
--Count Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam and Dave Grohl as just a couple of her many admirers and collaboraters. This year’s self-produced CD, Sun, opened at #10 on the Billboard chart, her highest charting recording ever! I love her though most as a live performer! She has this idiosyncratic and slinky way of prowling the stage that is all her own.

The Cedar/ 7:30/ $15-18/ AA
--King’s finger-style playing includes fret-tapping and using the guitar body for percussive beats. She counts Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters as one of her biggest fans and played on their 2007 album and on Rolling Stone Magazine’s 2006 list of “The New Guitar Gods”, she was the youngest and sole woman to be included!

Reports are they are thrilled to be touring with one their musical heroes, Gallagher, the former lead guitarist and principal songwriter for Oasis, who has long been considered one of the spear-heads of the Brit-pop movement. You will be hearing both new material and old favorites.
Father John Misty [aka Josh Tillman, drummer for Fleet Foxes, A Brian Oake Pick! May Sell Out!]
Fine Line/ 8:30/ $15/ 18+
--Tillman had a folk singer/songwriter career going before his drumming talent brought him to the attention of Fleet Foxes. He toured with them for the last four years promoting their first two albums. The stint allowed him the time and means to find his newer, cooler, more experimental folk-rock voice and record and release his strong new record, “Fear Fun”, under his new moniker “Father John Misty”.
Root City Band [Soulful Pop & Swingin’ Bluesy Rock, every Wed!]
Gluek’s/ 10:00/ $5/ 21+
--One of the most fun dance floor-filled weekly shows in the Twin Cities for the last decade is back for the month of September. Talented lead singer, writer, and guitarist Alex Rossi has had other projects taking him around the country and over the ocean but he and the gang’s infectious, swinging blues-rock should be in fine form.

Ben Gibbard [of Death Cab For Cutie]
Women’s Club, Mpls/ 8:00/ $32.50/ AA
--Former Lives, Gibbard’s solo debut album, is more breezy and poppy than his main bands’ output and the lyrical content jumps around interestingly. As he puts it; “These songs span eight years, three relationships, living in two different places and drinking then not drinking.” Though he calls the songs “square pegs that did not fit for Death Cab For Cutie or The Postal Service”, they easily stand up to some of the best of his career.
Graham Colton [Singer/Songwriter w/ 2008 Cities97 Hit “Best Days”!]
400 Bar/ 8:30/ $15/ 21+
--The album that “Best Days” came off of, Here Right Now, went to #4 and led to performances on Letterman, Craig Ferguson and The Today Show. He has continued to record and tour and his songs have been used in many TV shows and films over the last decade. In the last year and a half he as toured with Sheryl Crow and Mat Kearney and this is a rare chance to catch this talented rocker in an intimate club!
A. C. Newman [of The New Pornographers]
Turf Club/ 10:00/ $15/ 21+
--A truly great rock and pop songwriter whose first two bands in the 1990’s, grunge-poppers Superconductor and pop-rockers Zumpano were praised by critics but it was as main songwriter for the Vancouver-based pop supergroup, The New Pornographers, that his greatness was fully realized! Their album, Mass Romantic, was voted the 24th best indie album of all time in a 2007 Blender magazine Reader’s Poll. He is touring in support of his brand new album, Shut Down The Streets.
The Mighty Diamonds [Legendary Jamaican Roots Reggae Group]
The Cedar/ 7:30/ $20-25/ AA

Jorma Kaukonen [Founder of The Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna!]
Dakota/ 7:00/ $40/ AA
--“In a career already spanning a half-century, Jorma Kaukonen has stood at the forefront of rock n’ roll as a founder and lead guitarist for The Jefferson Airplane and then made his name as one of the most highly respected interpreters of American roots music, blues, and Americana with Hot Tuna. He is a leading practitioner and teacher of finger-style guitar playing and in 2003, Rolling Stone had him listed as the 54th greatest rock guitarist of all time and the 16th acoustic guitarist!”

Lyric Arts Main Stage, Anoka/ 7:30/ $20-24/ AA
