A killer tornado, at least a half mile wide, gave local residents very little time to seek safe shelter in the suburbs of Oklahoma City yesterday. The twister destroyed the community of Moore, which is about 10 miles south of Oklahoma City. The twister was a mile wide at its base, according to The Weather Channel. Another report said the tornado kicked up a cloud of debris perhaps two miles wide. The National Weather Service initially classified the storm as an EF4, the second-strongest type, with winds of 166 to 200 mph.
The press is reporting at least 51 dead, 20 kids, and 120 people being treated at hospitals. Officials warned that the death toll from Monday’s mid-afternoon twister was almost certain to rise significantly as more bodies were taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner. Elementary school children were among the many missing.
