Pearl Jam's 10th studio album (sheesh has it been that many?! I'm getting old), 'Lightning Bolt', will be released 10/15/13 (my bday is 10/24, pretty good Bday gift). I'm very much in new album mode now, though. Who are we kidding I have been for the last few weeks. WELL! I'm in luck AND if you'd like to check it out and you have an iTunes account or are willing to download the software, you're in luck too! You can stream the album here:
On the surface, this is a bright & shiny pop rock album, but there's so much more going on. Immediately, you hear something fresh & new, BUT then as you listen more and dig a bit deeper, you hear an essential Pearl Jam sound. Jim Farber, of the New York Times, brought up an interesting point. Pearl Jam's first album was "Ten" and now here they are with their tenth studio album, at times harkening back to those days. "Pendulum" sounds like it could've been on "Ten". And "Let The Records Play"!!!!! Holy biscuits and gravy, maybe the band came into the studio one day and there was a "spaghetti western" on? Oh, hell, here's a taste.....
2. "Mind Your Manners"
3. "My Father's Son"
5. "Lightning Bolt"
8. "Swallowed Whole"
9. "Let The Records Play"
10. "Sleeping By Myself"
11. "Yellow Moon"
12. "Future Days"
Ugh, listening to new music from this band gets me emotional. SO much goes through my head. When I first heard them. Taking my wife to her first show. Where I was when I heard this song or that song. The PJ20 festival, Wrigley Field, and then just the new songs themselves. This song definitely evokes some emotion as well....check out the live performance video for "Sirens"
AND a really cool documentary short film about the album, done by long time band friend Danny Clinch.
