The late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain would have turned 46 today and it is making me very reflective. For me, Nirvana was huge. They were loud, guitar-driven and echoed the angst of two of my other favorite bands, Pixies and Husker Du. I cried when I heard that Kurt Cobain had died.
Nirvana changed American Popular Music forever with the release their landmark 1991 album, Nevermind. However, the band's legacy goes back a bit further than that. Their very first single came out in 1988. It was a cover of the Dutch band Shocking Blue's 'Love Buzz' and it heralded the arrival of a band whose sound would change the world.
Interesting side note: Shocking Blue were the first Dutch band to ever score a #1 song in America with their 1969 single 'Venus' (later covered by Bananarama). Here is the original version of 'Love Buzz'.
