I have been asked to curate a guest DJ set tonight at First Avenue by my friend Jake Rudh. The occasion is the 12th Anniversary celebration of Jake's wildly popular weekly DJ gig, Transmission. Tonight's theme is the great indie and alternative music of the 90s. Jake goes as deep on music as anyone I know, so I am honored to have been invited to be a part of it. If you would like to come down, my set starts around 11p.
To get ready for my set, I have been poring over multiple playlists and sorting through hundreds of CDs. It has been nostalgic and very fun. All this week I have been sharing some 90s favorites. Here's one more.
The Smashing Pumpkins were, without question, one of the biggest bands of the alterantive music explosion of the 90s. Platinum albums. Massive arena shows. All over the radio. I am a fan, but at the risk of sounding like an aging hipster, I really do prefer the early stuff. This, my favorite Pumkin's track, is off of the bands 1991 debut release Gish. Turn it up loud and enjoy.
