As I was driving around tonight, I popped a mix CD I had recently made into the stereo in my truck. Like most of my mixes, it was a mish-mash of a little bit of everything. Singer/Songwriter, Nu Metal, ambient, 70's Classic Rock and, of course, one of my favorite genres, 80s New Wave.
My love of New Wave is deep. Very deep. I remember growing up and hearing these icy synthesizers creep into pop music and feeling like it was such an eerie sound, something haunting yet so enticing. To this day, new or old, I absolutely LOVE sparse electro pop...especially with female vocals.
Anyway, when the song in the video below came on, I cranked it way up. Sure the windows were all rolled down as I cruised home across South Minneapolis. Yes, I was singing along at the top of my lungs. I am certain that no shortage of people looked at me and thought 'Look at that tool...what is he trying to prove?' I didn't care what anyone thought then and I don't now. I was not showing off. I was not looking for approval. I was lost in the magic of a song I adore, and that was all that mattered. The sun was shining, I was cruising familiar streets and I felt totally alive. When it comes to Music and the way I celebrate it, I hope I never stop acting or feeling like a teenager.
This is the song that did it for me. Is there a song, new or old, that you love to sing along to in the car? At the top of your voice? And you don't car who hears? Let me know in the comment section below. Cheers.
