New York-based artist Laurie Anderson has been a performance artist, composer and musician since the mid-1970s. She continues to challenge and strive as an artists to this day. She is also a pioneer in electronic music, as evidenced by the 1981 song 'O Superman'. The YouTube descriptor for this video sums it up nicely:
"O Superman (For Massenet)" is a 1981 song by experimental performance artist and musician Laurie Anderson. Part of the larger work United States, "O Superman," a half-sung, half-spoken, almost minimalist piece unexpectedly rose to #2 on the UK Singles Charts in 1981. Prior to the success of this song, Anderson was little known outside the art world."
When I hear the words, I can barely believe that this song came out a full 20 YEARS before the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. To me, it was like it was written that day. I had heard this song many times before, but when I heard it the day after 9/11, it changed for me. Completely. For me, It was like this song had found its home. I will think of 9/11 every single time I hear this song for the rest of my life.
Be patient. It starts out very slow, but is worth seeing through to the end. One of my all time favorites.
