For many people, the end of the weekend is kind of a bummer. Not for me. For the last 16 years, starting at 9p every Sunday night, I have been on the radio ranting and raving about the best inedependent, imported and new releases I could lay my hands on that week. Freedom Rock is my passion project, my excuse to constantly indulge and try to recapture that impossibly amazing feeling of being a teenager and stumbling into that one completely amazing band...that one life changing song. Thankfully, I get to enjoy that feeling all the time.
Back in 2009, this debut single from the British indie group xx made it into my official Freedom Rock Top 20 Songs Of The Year. I still think it is great
Just today, I stumbled across this cover version by the all-female L.A. outfit Warpaint (another band that I have featured several times on Freedom Rock). What makes this collaboration so interesting is the vocalists the band enlisted for the cover. Taking the male vocals is Mark Lanegan, former lead singer of early 90s Grunge mainstays Screaming Trees. He is also a frequently featured guest vocalist on songs by my favorite band, Queens Of The Stone Age. Assuming female vocal duties is Martina Topley-Bird, whose voice you may recognize from her frequent guest stints with Tricky.
This version is looser and and only slightly less haunting than the original, but I still really like it. And, yes, Mark Lanegan DOES look like Will Ferrell doing an impersonation of Mark Lanegan. It's weird...
