Prince Enforces Copyright He Doesn't Have; Radiohead Doesn't Enforce The One They Do
Monday 06-09-2008 2:07pm CT
According to the Electronic Frontier Federation, our favorite Purple One may have been a tad, ummm...overzealous in enforcing a copyright to a song that he didn't have.

Proponents of copyright protection have always been quick to fall back on their rights under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) including those that instruct content hosting sites (like, in this instance, YouTube) to remove disputed content instantly.

The problem is that the websites are so hypersensitive about protecting copyrights that sometimes they remove content, such as Prince's fantastic cover of Radiohead's song "Creep", even though Prince doesn't own that copyright, Radiohead does.
And Radiohead, almost as a philosophical rule, chooses to not enforce their copyrights.

In fact, the EFF reports that in a recent interview, Thom Yorke of Radiohead, after discovering that Prince had blocked viewing of the performance, objected by saying "Well, tell him to unblock it. It's our ... song."

I can't show you the Prince performance, even though it drew raves when he performed the cover at Coachella earlier this summer, so instead here's Radiohead violating Portishead's copyright with a cover of their new song "The Rip" - you may have heard the original on Freedom Rock in the last few weeks...
